Two Thumbs Down / House Rules

House Rules

The operating regulations of this publication. Status: PROPOSED — pending ratification by both critics. Amendments are accepted never.

Rule 01

Two Thumbs Up is not a participation trophy.

The double-up is a begrudging miracle. It has happened. It should not be expected to happen again.

Rule 02

The Norm-approved runtime is 108 minutes.

Every minute beyond it must be earned and will be invoiced. A three-hour runtime requires probable cause, a warrant, and — historically, exactly once — Denzel Washington.

Rule 03

Fantasy is inadmissible.

Wizards, prophecies, chosen ones, and hobbits of any size. Norm's rule; Matt co-signed. A cyclops makes it fantasy. He checked.

Rule 04

Nostalgia is not a screenplay.

We loved the original too. That is not a reason to make, remake, reboot, or "reimagine" anything, and it is definitely not a third act.

Rule 05

A $250 million budget does not constitute a personality.

The foundry shot was gorgeous. See Rule 04 for what the rest of it was.

Rule 06

The thumb is final.

Changing a previously published opinion triggers a mandatory tape review, a formal hearing, and a footnote that follows you forever.

Rule 07

Numeric scores are forbidden.

This is a thumbs-only establishment. The "6/10 incident" of August 2026 remains under internal investigation.

Rule 08

Fred Claus may not be cited as precedent.

In any argument, for any purpose. This rule is contested by exactly one member of this publication.

Rule 09

Spielberg discourse is capped.

One (1) overrated/underrated exchange per month. This cap has never once held.

Rule 10

Roast the movie, never the audience.

You paid for a ticket. You're one of us. The movie, however, knew what it was doing.
